NFR.02 – DRC

Some of the world’s most valuable resources come from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Yet the lives of the people who bear the human cost of that wealth are too often pushed out of sight.

NFR.02 – DRC was created to confront that contradiction.

For decades, communities across Congo have endured conflict, displacement, exploitation and sexual violence. These realities are often reduced to statistics or briefly acknowledged before the world moves on. This piece exists to resist that disappearance—to keep Congo visible without turning its people’s suffering into spectacle.

On the front, four joined arms surround an Africa formed through continuous linework. The connected lines represent the relationships that exist beyond national borders—between African nations, cultures, communities and people. The arms carry equal weight, expressing a shared responsibility: Congo’s struggle is not Congo’s burden to carry alone.

Beside the emblem are the words:

AFRYK AESTHETICS — NOT FOR RESALE.

The statement carries particular weight on this piece. Congo has repeatedly been viewed through the value of what can be extracted from its land, while the dignity and safety of its people receive far less attention. “Not for Resale” rejects that logic. The garment may be purchased, but African identity, human dignity, natural inheritance and suffering are not commodities.

The back speaks with greater urgency.

FASHION IS ACTIVISM appears above humanitarian figures connected to lives lost, mass displacement and sexual violence in the DRC. Alongside them, #FREECONGO and the country’s geographical coordinates locate the message in a real place with a real history and real people.

The figures are not presented as decoration. Each number represents lives interrupted, homes abandoned, families separated and experiences that cannot be fully contained by statistics.

The light-blue-and-white pinstripe gives the garment a calm, familiar appearance. The red artwork interrupts that calm, reflecting the uncomfortable truth at the centre of the design: something can appear polished on the surface while carrying a much heavier reality underneath.

NFR.02 – DRC is not an attempt to speak over the Congolese people. It is an act of remembrance, solidarity and refusal—a refusal to benefit from Congo’s visibility as a source of wealth while ignoring the lives affected by its exploitation.

It asks the wearer to carry the story beyond the product page and into everyday spaces.

To remember.

To question.

To speak.

Because Congo is more than what can be taken from its land.
Because its people must never become invisible.
Because Africa must stand with Africa.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is not defined only by conflict, displacement or the resources extracted from its land. It is home to diverse peoples, languages, traditions, creative expressions and histories that cannot be reduced to a single narrative.

This piece does not attempt to speak on behalf of every Congolese person or represent the full complexity of the country. Instead, it acknowledges the human cost of prolonged violence and exploitation while refusing to turn that suffering into spectacle.

The joined arms surrounding the connected map of Africa express a shared continental responsibility: Congo’s pain must not be treated as distant or isolated. The phrase “Afryk Aesthetics — Not for Resale” reinforces that African identity, dignity, culture and human life are not commodities—even when the world places immense value on what can be taken from African land.

The figures printed on the back are included as records of human experience, not decorative statistics. Behind every number is a person, a family, a community and a story deserving recognition.
